New and exciting
As we come to that half way point of our journey, the team has bitter sweet emotions. But one thing that helps us through is just how stinking fabulous Nepal is. The Team experienced beauty through the environment at the Garden of Dreams. Also a lovely side note is the world's best iced tea is in Nepal within the cute cafe in the Garden if Dreams. For once you go your dreams will come true. :) One of the tourist destinations in Nepal is Thamel. Thamel holds a variety of shops, people and culture. The team has enjoyed window and souvenir shopping.
Culture
One cultural norm here is that your legs and shoulders must be covered. Nepal is a modest nation, and we have been conforming to and respecting this norm, by the way we dress. Nepali food consists of mainly rice, beans and lentils with a kick of spice. A true Nepali will only eat with their hands. Some members of our team have taken that to heart! (It has been a fun challenge.)A popular side dish here at the house is french fries. Yum!! (or as David would say, "Nom Nom! :)") It is rude to point at people, but instead gesture with your whole hand.
Hinduism
In between 80 to 90% of all Nepali people are Hindu. With that said walking around you can see shrines, tikas (the red dot on a persons forehead symbolizing that they are Hindu), and the chants of worship. It has been a neat learning about a religion and a culture so different from our own. Hindu's worship over 300 million gods, mostly revolving around nature. One of the more famous gods is the cow. You can walk around and see cows roaming along the road in addition to them grazing on grass. Because cows are one of their gods, Hindu people do not eat beef. Also, we have not been eating beef, but water buffalo, which is quite delicious. In the mornings we are sometimes woken up to our neighbors ringing a bell to wake up their Hindu gods in order to pray and worship them.
THE 4th!!!!!!!
#Maythe4thofJulybewithyou
Since we are loyal Americans we had to bring the July fourth celebration to Nepal. Our house eat pizza, drank strawberry milk, and wore red, white and blue. We had fun decorations and flags everywhere. We ended the party with a few rounds of telephone-pictionary. It was a wonderful evening.
